DENTAL VENEERS

Dental veneers are small and thin tooth-colored porcelain or composite shells that attach to the front of your tooth to give an instant new smile. They are most often made of porcelain, but can also be made of a resin composite material.

Dental veneer can help correct a wide range of dental problems, including:

• Cracked or worn teeth

• Crooked or malformed teeth

• Teeth that are discolored and not suitable for bleaching

• Uneven gaps or large gaps between the front teeth

• Unusually small teeth

Veneers also give a natural look to your teeth and can be stronger and look better than a dental crown.

How does dental veneer differ from dental crowns?

Unlike tooth veneer, crowns replace a significant portion of the natural tooth. A dental crown encloses the entire tooth and requires that the natural tooth be significantly sanded down. A dental veneer, on the other hand, covers only the front part of the tooth, which is visible when you smile.

What does the procedure involve?

The dental veneer procedure usually involves three appointments and can be performed on several teeth at once.

During your first appointment, you will have the opportunity to discuss with your dentist what result you want to achieve. The dentist will then examine your teeth and x-rays may be taken to make sure the veneer is right for you.

At your second visit, the dentist will prepare your tooth by reshaping the tooth surface to make room for a veneer. Then the dentist takes an impression of your teeth. The prints are sent to a dental laboratory, which manufactures your veneer.

At your last visit, the dentist places the veneer on your tooth and examines its fit and color. The dentist will then adjust the veneer as needed before permanently cementing it on your tooth.

How should you take care of your veneers once they have been placed?

Porcelain veneer holds approx. 10-15 years, while resin-based composite veneer lasts approx. 5-7 years. There are measures you can take to ensure optimal life for your veneers;

• Avoid chewing on hard objects such as pens, ice cream, hard candy or fingernails

• Never use your teeth to open packaging

• Eat only hard foods with your hind teeth

• If you gnash your teeth at night, use a bite splint

• If you play sports, use a tooth protector to protect your teeth

In addition, it is important to brush and floss regularly to keep your teeth and mouth healthy as you stadig can get holes under and around your veneers.
